International One Metre Compendium

If you don't really know where to start, take a look at our new Table of Contents.

Duck Soup said that maybe I know where to find things, but that I am the only one. Even he is confused.

Boat manufacturers supply their product in many configurations, including kits.

In the past we have mainly concentrated on the manufacturers that provide a fairly complete product, and have only notated kits that are available. We are now trying to get information on kits to include for comparison. If you have seen a nicely finished kit, or have built one yourself, let us know and maybe we can include it. We would like to have first hand information by someone who has built the kit if at all possible. So send us an email with contact info!

New Stuff, hatched in the last month or so: (Includes some editorial comment) If you have anything you want to see added, let us know and we will consider it.

  • There are some new radios on the horizon, look at the sketchy info on Spektrum 2.4 GHz technology

  • Gary Cameron, the designer of the TS-2 has just announced a new design, you guessed it, the TS3, and he has a web site where you can read the history of the TS designs.

  • Craig Smith, the manufacturer of the TS-2 has inaugurated his web site.

  • Please note the intro above, we want to find out about IOM kits. To this end we have added a new section, Kit IOMs, and will try to give you good information and cost comparisons. The first boat we have some information about is the Robbe Windstar, from Germany. The most complete information comes from an article by John Cox of the UK and was published Marine Modelling International by Traplet Publications Limited.

  • If you are interested in Waterproofing your electronics, take a look at the end of our Electronics page and follow the link.

Take a look at some interesting features we have added in the past!

  • Take a look inside the construction of your yacht! Several builders have shared their Construction Techniques with us, and we've added some detail photos.

  • We also have an interesting dissertation on Epoxy by Larry Robinson.

  • The new IOM International Class Association web site is up and running, check on the Helpful Web Sites page.

  • I think it is time to bow to some forces and inaugurate Simplified Rules as a starting point for the new recruits.

  • Check out the page on Used Boats, we do not list them but give you some thoughts about purchasing this way, as well as some possible sources.

Most builders want money up front and do not accept credit cards. This is an inconvenience, but except for some instances of slow delivery, the boats seem to always be delivered. You are advised to try to use a credit card for obvious reasons, and to get promised delivery dates. There is no way to be sure of the quality of the product except to look at other boats made by the manufacturer and talk to people who have purchased. This caution applies to supplies as well, including sails, rigging, and winches.

Please note that many of these boats are made outside the USA and are quoted on their website in their own currency. The conversions you will find here were as of November, 2002 (or as noted) using the Universal Currency Converter. This is a wholesale converter and you rarely get quite as advantageous exchange. You should verify the prices and take into account the cost of foreign drafts or wire transfers.

A note about US Customs and Duty. There is no duty on your new "toy"! That's right, your brand new IOM is classified by Customs as a toy and comes into this country as Toys and Scale Models under the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States, HTS #950390045. Parts and Accessories for Toys Not Specifically Provided For, such as sails or winches, come into this country under HTS #9503900070. Be sure your shipper uses the HTS number prominently on the package.

If you have a problem with any of the following information, please take the manufacturer to task, not us. We are just trying to help you get all the pieces you need. If you find someone new that we have not listed, and you are pleased, let us know and we might add them. If someone lets you down, let us know and we will probably remove any reference to them, after perhaps contacting them. If you are a manufacturer and want to be added, let us know who has bought your product and have them contact us, and perhaps we will add you. If you want some more information included about your background, write it up and send it to us, and if it is reasonable we will add it or edit it. Our main aim is to put together manufacturers and sailors for the mutual goal of promoting more IOMs in the USA!

Once you have your boat you will need further information about boat setup, trim and other fine points take a look at our list of Helpful Web Sites, Traveling with your boat, or some Other Stuff, and you might look at the Simplified Rules if you are having trouble getting the fleet to sail fair.
