Cost
Comparison
This page is a listing of all the boats we have information on and a comparison of the price based on
standard equipment. This page is the heart of the web site and the standard
equipment is listed at the top of the page and is as follows:Rig
The rigging is described in as many parts as you may need with details about
masts, booms,
wire for the standing rig,
line for the running
rigging, and fittings.
Usually included are sources for the item.
However, perhaps the best approach instead of trying to figure it all out is
to get a kit.
There has been a lot of interesting information about the strength of
masts and what materials are the best. Much about masts is covered in a
Metallurgy section
There is also a special page about the line for the boat. It should be
no surprise that we use fishing line.
Sails
Of course your rig is not complete without sails, and there are many
manufacturers that we do not mention in our brief comparison. Often the
builder of your boat makes sails that are well suited to the boat design,
take a look at their web sites.
Winch
At the heart of sail handling is your winch. there are four that we know of
and two that are very popular. The Whirlwind from Great Britain and the RMG
from Australia.
Once you have your winch, you will have to figure out how to set it up.
Again, the boat manufacturer often comes to your rescue with information,
but we do have some sources and information on
rigging your winch.
Boats
On the Cost Comparison page you will see al the various designs with our
standard equipment added on to give you an idea of the cost of the whole
package. We will delve quite deeply into this subject, it is really what we
are here for!
The first section is rather general and reviews
boats as an overview, reviewing what you
usually get in the package from the manufacturer.
The second section about boats is the more definitive
design section that will give you a
brief overview of individual designs and links to the manufacturers.
Some of the manufacturers have been kind enough to explain their
construction techniques and many
have been quite specific. We also have quite a detailed article about
Epoxy resin.
We must not forget our new section on Kits!
As time permits there will be additions to this section so you can compare
costs to completed hulls. This will be a good alternative if you have the
time.
Electronics
Well, now it is time to figure out how to control our new boat. You will
need a radio, with a
servo motor for steering and a way
to control your winch, and batteries
for both the boat and transmitter. You will also probably need a
battery charger.
We have some additional interesting information on servos discussing
coreless motors.
We also have some information about
waterproofing your
electronic components that are in the boat.
Racing Rules
This is a section that brings us all together, or splits us apart! You need
to know the rules and we have included a simplified rules section with links
to the full set of rules we all need to sail by.
And one of my favorites, rounding
marks, as told by me to Duck Soup, or is it visa versa?
Finally, there are several pages of interest, but not directly
related to your boat.
Helpful Web Sites, this is
a page of the links that I think are particularily usefull, and sometimes
even informative!
Traveling, some tips on packing
your boat for the long trip to the regional or national races.
Used Boats, we have included some
links, but don't be frustrated, some of the keep changing faster than we
can change our links.
And finally, Other Stuff, things
of interest that didn't seem to fit anywhere else such as
wind points,
scales for weighing your boat,
simple boat stands, and a
tensiometer for
checking your rig tension.
