Used Boats

Remember, it's buyer beware!

It is with some trepidation that I add this page to the site, but there are always personal budgets to pay attention to, as well as the fact there are often some real bargains out there.

In this day of digital cameras, my little snap shooter cost about $50 complete with the necessary programs, there is no reason you cannot "see" the boat before you purchase. I also know that Wal-Mart will put a roll of photographs on the web for less than a dollar. So ... be sure to ask for photographs, either mailed or through the web. From this you can see the aesthetics of the boat as well as some of the conditions. Have close ups taken of the main rigging points, on the deck as well as internal if possible. In fact have close-ups taken of most everything, sailing pictures are nice but you cannot tell what you are getting.

Next, get a detailed list of all the equipment and how old and how much use things have had. This is particularly important for sails and electronics. Ask how often the boat has to be taken out of the water to have leaking water drained out, and be aware that sailing conditions may make quite a difference here.

Now, ask about packing, shipping and insurance costs. Insurance is important and what kind of box the boat is in will affect the condition. However, even if it is insured, you don't want to start with an insurance claim and a damaged boat that you cannot sail.

The following links are ones that I know of and you may find more:

That is all of the ones I know of, but please click on the email box at the right if you find other sites that you think are helpful and should be added.
