| A word of caution about winches, boat designers often favor a particular winch due to the configuration of the interior of the boat. I recently burned up my winch, and not having a spare started looking for a winch to borrow. It immediately became clear that your spare, if you have one, better be the same winch, or you will be making some mounting adapters in a hurry. |

RMG from Australia, 280 model, this winch has an open gear train just as shown in the RMG web page. It can easily be used for through deck or under deck mounting. The manufacturer recommends if the winch is under the deck it is best mounted with the shaft horizontally, drum vertically, which makes it a space problem in some boat configurations. Will take Visa and MasterCard. Whirlwind from England, Tensor High Speed Digital, is a closed winch. They have now gone out of business, but still repair their winches. Look at the Whirlwind web site. Futaba S5801 Sail Winch Servo, This winch can be seen on the Tower Hobbies web site, and most any source will take Visa and MasterCard. Hitec designed for Laser, and perhaps too slow for an IOM, but some who have tried it have changed to a faster winch, others have fitted a larger diameter drum, and still others use it like it is and just start sheeting sooner to anticipate maneuvers. Look at Hitec and remember, most any source will take Visa and MasterCard. The winch is available with different plugs for different receivers. WINCH SETUP Well, now that you have your boat and winch, how do you run the strings around the boat to move the sails? I suggest that you look at the winch manufacturer's data, and some web sites. Look at this LINK when you are ready to find some more technical data. |
